Maggie grabbed another cookie on her way toward Terrent. Reaching him, she finished the chocolate treat. âSo, Roger, huh?â
âGuess so. Heâll learn to leadâthe pack is strong enough to teach him.â The moon glinted down to highlight Terrentâs predatory face. âPlus, the guy can fight. So if the Ausgel pack attacks, heâll come in handy.â
The band started to play a slow song.
Terrent took her hand and tugged her around. His palm pressed her lower back, and his head dropped to the top of hers. âDance with me.â
She sighed and relaxed against him. So much heat, so much strength. âYou would be happy here.â
âIâm happy wherever you are.â His breath brushed her forehead. âAlways have been.â
She snuggled closer. âIâd imagine that being the only survivor of an entire pack might lend itself to some survivorâs guilt. Such guilt might force somebody to wander alone, never trusting himself to belong to another pack.â
He kissed the top of her head. âYou shrinking my head, now?â
âMaybe.â She shrugged. âSomething to think about. You were only a baby and have nothing to atone for.â
âHmmm. I have plenty to atone for, believe me.â He swallowed. âMaybe you shouldâve been a shrink.â
âI donât really have a job.â For ten years, sheâd trained and tried to regain her memories. Maybe they were lost forever. âWhat did I do before I was taken?â
âYou taught physics.â He pulled her closer. âIn fact, several of your theories have improved the way the Realm fights werewolves. In just the year that we dated, your research resulted in strategic moves for the Baneâs Council that saved my life more than once. Very impressive. And I guess you liked teaching.â
She could see that. âToo bad I donât remember physics.â
âRelearn physics, or learn something else.â His chest shifted against hers.
Her nipples sprang to life. âI might do that, considering my career as an investigator has stalled.â
âDonât worry about the saboteur. Whoever has been messing with the drugs is well trained. They didnât leave a clue. Besides, we have security measures in place now. The drugs are safe.â
She coughed. Guilt swirled through her abdomen. âTerrentââ
âVilks!â Roger called out. âI need to speak with you.â
Terrent stiffened but didnât turn around. He leaned back and brushed a curl off her face. âApparently the new Alpha would like to speak to me.â He waited just long enough to be barely insulting before pivoting toward the lodge and taking her hand. âWhy donât you come with me?â
âAm I supposed to cheer you on or keep you from hurting him?â she asked.
Terrent lifted a shoulder.
They entered the lodge and went to the same conference room as last time. Roger seated himself at the head of the table. Gerald sat to his left, worry darkening his eyes. Nash guarded the door, his expression blank.
Maggie slowed. The tension in the room shot right to her ankles. Tingles swept up her legs. She breathed in quickly and held the oxygen in her lungs. The moment passed, and she dropped into a chair.
Terrent remained standing. âWhat?â
Roger leaned his elbows on the table, his eyes a dark brown.
